About

The Orbro philosophy starts with the idea of building a long-term relationship with customers by providing complete, robust solutions for their web and custom programming needs.  There is nothing more rewarding than being called by one of our existing customers to do another project for them, unless it is being called by a new customer referred to us by one our existing customers.  We hope to provide you the one-stop service for website design, hosting, and custom programming.  We also encourage you to view our software services, which are several spin-off turn-key solutions built on years of solid, custom programming experience.

Orbro History

Orbro was founded in Michigan in 1996; we originally provided training and on-site service for the whole budding "Internet" thing.  In 2000, we set up our own website hosting facilities and targeted website design and hosting.  Our primary focus was member associations and small businesses.  A little-known fact: In 2000, as we were ramping up our website hosting facilities, we did a midnight code transfer from an overburdened client server to our new servers and were able to deliver the hosting free of charge to Michigan's statewide mock election, which was an obvious foreshadowing of our AssociationVoting.com online election service.

Over the last decade, Orbro's product line and project portfolio has grown and adapted to match the changing needs of our customers and the changing web environment:

  • We've developed complete solution websites for delivery of state curriculum materials, certification exams, teaching standards, and more
  • We've implemented e-commerce solutions with SkipJack, Authorize.Net, PayPal, Omega Processing, and other online processors, as stand-alone PHP components, integrable web forms, in Joomla, and in Drupal
  • We've developed online and offline solutions in SilverLight and other .NET tools
  • We've implemented numerous Joomla and Drupal extensions
  • We've built extensible content management systems (CMS) -- that was before Joomla, Drupal, and others really came into their own
  • We've implemented many association and business websites, from custom-built solutions to using Joomla, Drupal, or other CMS solutions
  • We've implemented an online mail merge solution that allows for mass personalization of emails to group members
  • We've integrated with back-end data systems, web services, and other existing/legacy systems to leverage what is already in place for new uses
  • We've provided technical leadership and advice for large projects involving both client employee and other contractor developers
And while we know that we're throwing a long list at you, we encourage you to look around our website or contact us for what we can do for you.

Orbro Members

Orbro is privately held by two principal members:

Gregory R Brown
Greg is a Sun-certified Java developer who has wide-ranging experience in Java, .NET, and LAMP tools and technologies. Greg designed the Orbro Testing System, used by a coalition of 21 K-12 and higher ed institutions to provide an online diagnostic/prescriptive test for high school seniors to determine where they would place in college math and how to improve their future prospects going into their last year of public school, which is also used now by national organizations for professional certification.  Greg holds advanced degrees in computer science and information systems management from Michigan State University and Ferris State University.

Jonathan L Brown
Jonathan has wide-ranging experience in developing on LAMP technologies, including integration with Joomla/Drupal CMS, e-commerce and EDI integration, as well as system architecture and network design.  Jonathan designed and implemented the original AssociationVoting.com voting system, and he has been involved in other start-up and entrepreneurial ventures that have been helpful in expanding his technical versatility and understanding of systems large and small.  Jonathan holds advanced degrees in computer science and mathematics from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.  More information is available on his website www.jonathanlbrown.com.

Technology

Our primary technologies are open source and LAMP tools -- LAMP being Linux OS, Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP.  We also have extensive experience in Perl and mod_perl integration and coding, and several of our major projects in the past were implemented in Perl.  We have recently developed an expertise in Microsoft .NET tools, including developing VB.NET desktop applications and SilverLight tools that run either in an offline or online mode.

Hosting

Orbro provides hosting in Michigan on company-owned servers at a Class A co-location facility.  Orbro can also provide management services for systems that are located at virtual hosting or cloud computing facilities.  We have experience configuring and monitoring high-availability configurations for mission-critical web services and servers.
