Fair Host Pledge

We have provided hosting a long time -- since 2001 -- and, in that time, we have had customers come and go.  Nothing is more difficult than being contacted by a potential customer who is looking for a hosting provider because their provider has driven them away -- only to learn that their website, their domain name, their email, or something else that should be "theirs" is actually owned by the old hosting provider.  Further, we find out they want to use that as leverage to extract something -- whether that's continued hosting, a transfer fee, or something else.

It is our position that what is yours is really yours -- and so we have a five point Fair Host Pledge.  If you purchase hosting from Orbro, we pledge:

  1. Your domain is your domain. We are happy to register your domain name and to provide DNS service for it.  As part of this, we will use a third party registrar.  We will pass along the cost of registration to you with a copy of our registration receipt.  When it comes time for you to leave, or if you'd just like control of your domain name, we will transfer your domain name to your account at the same or a different registrar.  It is usually free to transfer domains between accounts at the same registrar.  We are not domain name registrars.
  2. Your website is your website. We will zip up your website contents and send those over to you.  As we believe in open using open source tools where possible, this is the whole story for most websites.  Move it, unzip it on a LAMP or WAMP host, and it should just run.  Custom programming is done on a work-for-hire basis.  If you need assistance in setting up the site on your new host, we will charge the same hourly rate as we would for custom work if we hosted the site.  If you found you needed some particular tool we provided, see if we offer that as a software service.
  3. Your email is your email. Any email you have on the server we will be glad to zip up and send to you as well.  Many customers set up an IMAP account with us in Thunderbird or Outlook.  You can migrate the emails yourself to your local computer through IMAP, or there are third party extensions for importing from server email format to your desktop email client.  You can also pass the files from us on to your new ISP and have them import your folders.
  4. We will provide short term forwarding. For at least two weeks after leaving, we will forward your emails and website to your new host, provided you give us that information.
  5. We will try all methods of contact we have before shutting off your website for non-payment. If you have an unpaid hosting balance that is leading to a termination of service, we will try to contact you.  We will use all contact information provided -- email, postal mail, telephone, fax -- as well as reaching out to your technical and non-billing contacts if we cannot reach your billing contact.
